Coinfig publishes guides on how crypto is taxed, mainly in South Africa. This page explains how those guides are researched, written, reviewed and kept up to date, so you can judge how far to rely on them.
Primary sources
Every tax statement in a guide is based on primary sources, not on summaries or on what other providers say. For South Africa these are:
- the SARS crypto assets page
- the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962, including the Eighth Schedule, which sets out how capital gains are taxed
- SARS guides and interpretation notes, including the SARS draft guide on crypto assets published in 2026
Guides for other countries use the equivalent published law and guidance of that country's tax authority, such as the IRS, HMRC or the ATO.
Where a rule is uncertain, or rests on draft guidance rather than settled law, the guide says so.
Who writes the guides
Guides are written and published by the Coinfig team, shown as the author at the top of every guide.
Review and updates
Each guide shows the date it was published and the date it was last updated. We review guides when SARS rules change, for example after the Budget or when SARS publishes new guidance, and again before each filing season.
Guides may also be reviewed by a registered tax practitioner. When a guide has been reviewed, it names the reviewer, their credential and the review date at the top of the page. A guide without that line has not had an external review.
How we use AI tools
We use AI tools to help draft and edit some text. They are drafting assistance only. A person checks every page against the primary sources before it is published, and that person is responsible for what it says.
Reporting an error
If you think something in a guide is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the page address and what you believe is incorrect. We check every report against the sources, correct the page where needed and update its date.
Not tax advice
Coinfig is a calculation and reporting tool. It does not provide tax advice, legal advice, financial advice or investment advice, and nothing in our guides should be treated as such. Guides explain general rules and are not a substitute for advice from a qualified tax practitioner on your own circumstances. Coinfig is not associated with or endorsed by any tax authority, such as SARS, the IRS, HMRC or the ATO. The full wording is in our Disclaimer.
